The Fatigue of the Aftermath

There is a specific kind of exhaustion that hits after the lights come back on and the water begins to flow again. During the storm, adrenaline keeps us going. We haul the wood, we boil the water, and we keep the children calm. But once the "emergency" is over, we often find ourselves hitting a wall of physical and emotional fatigue.

As you look at the tasks ahead this week—the laundry that piled up, the repairs that need making, and the normal routines that feel heavier than usual—it is easy to feel "faint in heart."

The writer of Hebrews understood that the walk of faith is often a marathon, not a sprint. In the wake of a difficult week, the Holy Spirit offers us this instruction:

"Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed."Hebrews 12:12–13 (NKJV)

Notice that God doesn't tell us to just "tough it out" on our own. He acknowledges that our hands do hang down sometimes and our knees do get weak. The "healing" comes when we stop trying to run on empty and instead make "straight paths" simplifying our lives to focus on what truly matters: our walk with Him and our service to our families.

Endurance

This past week, many of us have watched our "to-do" lists vanish, replaced by a single, grueling goal: endurance. Between the biting cold of the ice, the silence of a home without power, and the stress of dry taps, many have had a long week.

When the thermostat drops and challenges happen, it’s easy to find ourselves asking, "Lord, how much longer?"

In Psalm 147:16-17, the Psalmist writes:

"He gives snow like wool; He scatters the frost like ashes; He casts out His hail like morsels; Who can stand before His cold?"

It is a reminder that we serve a powerful God. But the passage doesn't end there. It continues to say that He sends His word and melts them.

The same God who allows the "icy blast" is the one who provides the thaw. For some, this week has stripped away our modern dependencies, perhaps to remind us that our true "refuge and strength" (Psalm 46:1) isn't found in a power grid, but in the Word that never fails.
